I Have Lost All Respect….
for Serena Williams that is. While she had started her career as one of the greatest women’s tennis players of our time, it seems that her success has gone to her head. This became evident back in 2009 when she landed herself on probation with her explicit outburst towards a line judge in her semi-final against eventual champion Kim Clijsters.
After seeing multiple news stories about her outburst on the news last night, I couldn’t help but side with the ref. She was only doing her job and called Serena out for screaming before her opponent even had a chance to touch the ball with her racquet. How can you knowingly break the rules and the get pissed when you are called out for it?There was no reason to call the ref “unattractive inside” simply because she was doing her job. Serena obviously must have realized her wrong-doing after the fact because when she was asked about the outburst, she played dumb and “claimed” she could not remember exactly what was said.
What bothers me most is what kind of role model is she being for the youth of today? Children follow by example and her actions are showing them that its OK to be unsportsmanlike and a sore loser when things do not go their way. What makes it even worse is she tried to play her outburst off as freedom of speech which I guess is her way of rationalizing and telling herself that what she did was OK. In my opinion she needs to grow up and start acting like the professional role model that others perceive her to be. Otherwise she may find herself kicked out of the career that has brought her the fame and fortune she has so become accustomed to.
