Embarking on New Ventures

As 2011 rapidly approaches its end, I face yet another season of not knowing whether or not I will still have a job at the start of the new year. While the field of computers offers its fair share of challenges, it also comes with its fair share of unknowns, and it is the stress of the unknown that has become too much for me to bear.

While I have always yearned to branch out on my own in a business that I truly love, my passion alone does not pay the bills, so I have remained working paycheck to paycheck until I was told my services were no longer needed. Having grown tired of this vicious circle I constantly find myself in, I realized that I need start working on other income generating solutions before I find myself on unemployment, struggling to make ends meet.

When I was younger, I loved to spend my free time drawing, crocheting, painting or any other craft that I found interesting. As I got older and entered the working world, the artistic part of me seemed to have been pushed aside because I never seemed to have the time to dedicate to it, but recently realized that needed to change.

As the owner of my own Etsy store, Jennie’s Home Made Goods I have dabbled in trying to sell my wares online in the past, but gave up in the past because I did not see the results that I had been hoping for.  That has recently changed as I have just started working on hopefully turning my hobby into a full-time business, and while this new venture is exciting, I never truly realized how much work is required to get a new business off the ground.

While I already had some inventory on hand, further analysis of my store showed that my photos and other details were not as good as they could have been. I also did not have any connections within the Etsy circle which left me as more of a hobbyist than one who was actually looking to turn this into a full-time income.

In the past few weeks I have updated my item descriptions as well as added new photos to better represent what I am selling. I now face the task of creating a new banner for my store, and just recently realized that my knowledge of Photoshop is much more rusty than I thought it was.  While the path to success is a tough one, I can only hope that all my hard work pays off so I can finally sleep better at night knowing that I have more than just my FT job to depend on to make ends meet.

  1. Hi Jennie,
I loved the posts in your blog.. Also have one http://www.carmensilvia2.wordpress.com and an “Etsy” shop: festivebazaar.etsy.com

I’ll check out your store and then maybe you can give me some pointers about my blog. I want to have a style where all the stories will flow without going into categories first and I don’t how to set it up. Help will be appreciated.

    Silvia

  2. I tried to give you 5 stars, but the clicker wouldn’t let me. The post are well written and can be shared by a lot of people dealing with her circumstances. I hope you’ll write to me.
